CROWLEY - The Crowley Police Jury met Thursday evening for their monthly committee meetings. The meeting was postponed from their scheduled Tuesday night meeting because the air conditioning and water in the courthouse was shut down on that night. During the Building and Grounds meeting they discussed the proposed Acadia Parish Health Unit, its funding, and where the site would be located.

The proposed unit would house a trauma center.

It was brought up by juror Al Stevenson that the hospital offered a 100 year lease for some land to build the site on.

Juror John Quebodeaux stated that he wasn’t not comfortable mixing public and private funds.

Other sites were discussed as possibilities for the unit, however, in the end the jury decided that it would be best for the Building and Grounds Committee to attend a meeting with American Legion’s Andrus Barousse to discuss other possibilities.

During the legislative committee’s report, Mr. Nelson Sonnier was given an old phone booth that has been used on the courthouse’s second floor for storage.

Due to some confusion as to who the rightful owner of the phone booth was, Sonnier said he didn’t know who actually owned the booth.

“Now they’re trying to take it from me,” said Sonnier.

The jury motioned to let Sonnier have the booth.

“What are you going to do with it,” asked one of the jurors.

“I’m bringing it home,” smiled Sonnier.

During the Finance Committee’s report it was motioned that a final payment be made to Lewing Construction for the building of the Acadia Parish Correctional Facility.

The jury passed the motion.

A motion was also passed to hire a full-time deputy to work security at the courthouse. When asked if a security guard would be enough, it was stated that they wanted someone that was up to the task not a “older person with one bullet in his gun.”

“Well I guess that takes my mother out of the running,” said Police Jury Secretary/Treasurer Terry Lacombe to the laughter of those in attendance.
