Carl Joseph Kibodeaux

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 6, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Crowley for Carl Joseph Kibodeaux, 53, who died Wednesday, May 4, 2017, at 1:05 a.m.at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Fr. Michael DeBlanc, associate pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, will officiate for the services. The family requests visiting hours Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. A rosary will be recited Friday at 6:30 p.m. by Shelly Istre. Burial will be in Woodlawn Mausoleum.
Carl is survived by his wife Georgette Guidry Miller Kibodeaux of Crowley; one daughter, Ida Lawrence and her husband Daniel of Carencro; one son Carl Joseph Antoine Kibodeaux of Lafayette; two grandsons, Charlie Antoine and Chandler Joseph; two stepdaughters, Katherine Miller Hebert and Jeanne E. Miller; and one step-granddaughter, Alyssa Claire Hebert; one brother, Percy Lee Kibodeaux and his wife Judy of Crowley; three sisters, Gwendolyn K. Kibodeaux and her husband Steven of Crowley, Joanna K. Smith and her husband Howard of Iota and Carla K. Labove of Crowley; brother-in-law, Wilfred P. Mathiew of Crowley; 13 nieces and nephews and 18 great-nieces and nephews; godchildren, Penny Jane Thibodeaux, Larry Labove, Jean Lejeune, Amanda Mae Fontenot and Jennifer Lyn Fusilier.
Pallbearers will be Percy L. Kibodeaux, Carl “JA” Kibodeaux, Daniel W. Lawrence, Nicholas K. Kibodeaux, Percy L. Kibodeaux II, Larry P. Labove and Joseph S. Mathiew. Honorary pallbearers will be, Brian K. Thibodeaux, Kyle J. Jensen, and Marcus Mathiew.
Carl was preceded in death by his first wife, Connie B. Kibodeaux; his parents, Joseph W. Kibodeaux and Ida Guidry Kibodeaux; one sister, Diana K. Mathiew and brother-in-law, Larry Labove.
He worked for Noble Drilling in the safety division for 23 years, and was an active volunteer with his children’s schools. He enjoyed wood working and riding his Harley Motorcycles.

Elizabeth Beard “Sis” Gardiner

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 5, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church for Elizabeth Beard “Sis” Gardiner, 81, who died May 1, 2017 at Acadia General Hospital.
Monsignor Paul Metrejean will be officiating for the services with Fr. Mikel Polson concelebrating. The family is requesting visiting hours to be held Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Thursday. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Thomas Gardiner Sr. of Crowley; one daughter, Jody G. Sarver and her husband Tommy; two sons, Tommy Gardiner Jr. and his wife Tammy of Baton Rouge and Christopher Gardiner of Crowley; one brother, Leonard Beard and his wife Karen of Crowley; five grandchildren, Andrew Sarver, Ashley S. Abshire and her husband Josh, Alexis C. Sarver, Hannah Gardiner and Emily Gardiner; and two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Jack Abshire.
Sis is preceded in death by her parents, Arville and Ernestine Cart Beard; and four brothers, Hershal, Harold, Hillary and James Beard.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Sarver, Joshua Abshire, Stewart Beard, Bradley Beard, John Gardiner and Bill Malmay.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael Elementary School, Notre Dame High School, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and/or MD Anderson Research Hospital.

Beta Sigma Phi to host Project Pink, honoree announced

RAYNE - Preceptor Alpha Chi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi announces the 19th annual “Project Pink”, Breast Cancer Awareness event, to be held Saturday, May 27, at the Rayne Civic Center.
The day for the 2017 observance will be dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Susie Borne Roberts, who recently lost her battle with breast cancer. An invitation is being extended to all breast cancer survivors to join the day-long event.
Bring your “PINK” hats all decorated for judging. Prizes will be awarded.
Raffle tickets are currently on sale for the “Angel of Hope, 12” Seraphim Angel valued at $175. This is a numbered, limited edition sculpted and delicately hand painted angel. She wears a pink ribbon and sash to represent the commitment to bringing the world closer to a cure. The winner will have a choice between the angel or $150 cash.
The 9th annual “Miss Project Pink” pageant will also be held at this time. The queens will hold titles for a year and their primary responsibility will be to inform others throughout the state about the event and invite them to participate in this well-known “Breast Cancer Awareness” event. Door admission is $5 for adults, $3 school age children and little ones four years and under will be admitted free.
The “Children’s Categories” (those younger than 13) will begin with registration at 9 a.m. and competition will begin at 9:30 a.m. Attire will be sportswear. Entry fee for these age groups will be $40 prior registration and $50 at the door.
Children’s categories are as follows: Baby Project Pink (0 – 11 months); T’Nincy Project Pink (12 – 23 months); Toddler Project Pink (2 years); Tiny Project Pink (3 – 4 years); Petite Project Pink (5 – 6 years); Little Project Pink (7 – 9 years); and Deb Project Pink (10 – 12 years).
The “Senior Categories” (those over 13 years of age) will begin with registration at 12 noon and competition will begin at 12:30 p.m.. Attire will be formal wear. The competition will not have interviews but will include stage presentation only. Entry fee for these age groups will be $50 prior registration and $60 at the door. The Senior Categories are as follows: Junior Project Pink (13 -14 years); Teen Project Pink (15 – 16 years); Miss Project Pink (17 – 23 years); Ms. Project Pink (24 – 39 years); and Lady Project Pink (40 years and over).
There will be an optional “Photogenic Award” in each category. Those wishing to participate will turn in their photo and a $5 fee per photo, during proper registration periods.

Rayne Garden Club plans 2017 Flower Show

Events planned, public invited to attend

The 2017 Annual Flower Show will be presented by the Rayne Garden Club on Friday, May 5, at Green Room of the Rayne Civic Center Complex as announced by Chairperson Lisa Soileaux.
The theme for the event is “A Floral Celebration” for the design division, in addition to the horticultural division.
Viewing will be held between 3-6 p.m. for the general public at the Green Room. The event is free to the public.

2017 Debutante Ball planned this weekend in Rayne

Debs honored during annual Debutant Tea by Ebonites

In preparation of this weekend’s 2017 Debutante Introductions and Ball, the Ebonite Civic and Social Club of Rayne, Inc., hosted its annual Debutante Tea on Sunday, April 30 at the Mural Room of the Rayne Civic Center Complex.
The Debs were welcomed by club members, in addition to last year’s honoree, Haylee Young, and joined by their escorts for the Ball.
Presiding over the social was Christine B. Freeman, with greetings extended by Joan Francis-Brown.
A prayer was led by Deanna Begnaud, with a dance selection presented by the New Testament Ministry Praise Dance Team.
Remarks were delivered by club president Roxyanne Guillory, followed by a dance selection performed by PJ’s Dance School of Arts.
Each of the Debs performed a talent, incuding dance, songs and poetry.
Door prizes were awarded with refreshments then enjoyed by all in attendance.
Special thanks were extended to the Deb parents for allowing their daughters to be presented into society by the Ebonite Civic and Social Club of Rayne.
Deb Ball chairperson is Joan Francis Brown, with Ursula Hawkins serving as co-chairperson. Deb Ball committee members are Roxyanne Guillory, Jacquline Wiltz and Edra Broussard.
The 2017 Debutantes were:
Tajané Butler, daughter of TaShaka Butler and a senior at Rayne High School;
Lanisha Francis, daughter of Chris Pleasant and Wilbert Francis, and a junior at Rayne High School;
Terézan Lewis, daughter of Walter and Kathy Lewis and a junior at Riverside High School in New Orleans;
Allison Milstead, daughter of Clifford and Kizzy Broussard and a junior at Carencro High School;

This year’s Ball will be held this weekend on Saturday, May 4, at the Rayne Civic Center.

Rayne gearing up for 45th Frog Festival

The city of Rayne is gearing up to welcome thousands of visitors to the 45th Rayne Frog Festival on May 10-13 at the Frog Festival grounds.
The unique “Fete des Oua Oua Rons” (Cajun for festival of the bullfrogs) offers a safe, family-friendly event for all ages and cultures.
Rain or shine, the spacious Frog Festival Pavilion provides the perfect venue for the festival.
Advance carnival ride tickets for $20 are available from Mitchell Brothers Amusements at the Rayne Chamber office. The tickets can be used Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
Bring your ticket/tickets to the Carnival Ticket Booth for a special wristband that will allow you to ride any ride, as many times as you wish.
The Chamber will sell the advance tickets on Friday, May 5, during regular business hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Monday, May 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Tuesday, May 9, during regular business hours (until 4 p.m.).
A Frog Festival Blood Drive, conducted by United Blood Services, will be held on Monday, May 8, from 2:30 to 7 p.m. at the Rayne Chamber office at 107 W. Oak St. The first 30 donors will receive a free carnival ride bracelet good for Thursday night at the festival.
At the Souvenir Booth, the official Frog Festival Poster, 2017 Frog Festival T-shirts and a large variety of “frog” items will be sold.
Handicap parking is available (look for the signs).
A Kids Area, providing arts and crafts, face painting and more, provides a safe place for the children to enjoy the festival with their parents.
No ice chests or pets will be allowed on the grounds.
The festival kicks off Wednesday, May 10, at 5 p.m. with “Carnival Family Night” with Mitchell Bros. & Sons Amusements offering “Wristband Specials” to popular rides for all ages, games and food. No admission charged to enter the grounds on Wednesday.
On Thursday, May 11, gates open at 5 p.m., again with free admission.
After opening ceremonies at 5:30 p.m., vendor booths will open, and musical entertainment by High Performance from 6 to 9 p.m. will provide music for dancing and the Jitterbug and Waltz Dance Contests.
On Friday, May 12, the entertainment, food and fun continue at 5 p.m. when the gates open.
The annual Arts & Craft Show, sponsored by the Rayne Civic Beautification Board and located on the festival grounds, will officially open at that time.
Musical entertainment will be provided by 2016 Accordion Contest winner Seth Spell and Cajun Strong, featuring Jamey Beard and Jason Bergeron, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the main stage.
Admission on Friday and Saturday is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and younger.
The gates open at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and the day begins with the annual Diaper Derby, sponsored by the Rayne Jaycees, at 9 a.m. on Stage II.
The annual Frog Derby Queen’s Contest, sponsored by the Rayne Lions Club, begins at 10 a.m. and features pretty ladies dressed in jockey attire and the biggest frogs jumping in all directions!
To enhance the festival mood for the public, the Parade Block Party, sponsored by Dup’s DJ Service, will be held at Rayne City Hall on The Boulevard beginning at 10 a.m.
During the Grand Parade, recognition of dignitaries, float sponsors and parade participants will be made from the city hall Block Party area.
This year’s Parade Grand Marshals, Carol and Helen Menard, Rayne natives, lead the parade line-up of area high school bands, local and visiting kings and queens, and floats. beginning at 11 a.m. in downtown Rayne.
The Frog Festival 4-Ball Golf Tournament will tee-off at 10 a.m., sponsored by Cajun Pine Golf Club in nearby Branch.
Meanwhile, back at the festival grounds, the second annual Frog Cook-off, which began earlier in the morning, will be ready for the judging at noon.
On Stage II, the second annual Frog Leg Etiquette Eating Contest, sponsored by the City of Rayne begins at 1 p.m. Contestants are representatives of local civic, social and church organizations.
On the Main Stage, from 1 to 3:30 p.m., the second annual Cajun Accordion Contest, with contestants vying for winner category prizes and the grand prize of an original Richard Cajun Accordion will definitely be a toe-tapping entertainment.
The frogs keep on jumping for the Frog Racing and Jumping Contest at 1:30 p.m. This event is open to the public, including children and adults categories.
Frogs are available to rent for a small fee from sponsors, Rayne Jaycees and the Rayne Acadian-Tribune. Trophies and other prizes are awarded.
At 3:30 p.m., winners of the Frog Cook-off and Accordion Contest will be announced from the Main Stage.
Musical entertainment continues with The Legends of Swamp Pop, featuring Warren Storm, Willie T, Tommy McClain, TK Hulin, Charles Mann & The Cypress Band performing from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on the Main Stage.
Jamie Bergeron and the Kickin’ Cajuns take the stage from 7 to 9 p.m.; followed by Keith Frank and the Soileau Zydeco Band from 9:30 until midnight.

Ethel Leon Leger

RAYNE - Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 4, at a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne for Ethel Leon Leger, 88, who died Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at her residence in Scott.
Interment will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery #2, Mausoleum in Rayne.
Rev. Kevin Bordelon, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, will be the celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services.
Survivors include four daughters, Ruth Ann Leger of Rayne, Cecile Leger of Rayne, Myra Leger of Rayne, and Sheila Leger Schexnaider and husband Lee of Abbeville; two sons, Joey Leger and wife Susan of Jennings, and Mark Louis Leger of Rayne; son-in-law, Duane Ledford Sr. of Crowley; nine grandchildren, Beth Schefcik and husband Travis, Jackie McGrew and husband Brian, Duane Ledford Jr. and wife Elizabeth, Abbie Rorex and husband Bailey, Andrew Lyons, Brittanty Ringuet and husband Kolby, Victoria Leger, Courtney Roy and fiance Ashley,and Phillip Schexnaider; eight great-grandchildren, Brantley Schfcik, Gavin Schefcik, Olivia Faye Schefcik, Samuel McGrew, Gabriel McGrew, Wyatt Ledford, Edith Rorex and Luke Roy, sister; Lurnice Leon Meche and husband Leo Val of Mire; brother, Laurie Leon and wife Cheryl of Duson; fiance, Deloris “Duke” Duplechin of Scott; and sister-in-law, Anna Bell Leon of Duson.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Merton Joseph Leger, two daughters, Faye Marie Leger Ledford and Claire Louise Leger; father, Lawrence Leon; mother, Lula Guidry Leon; sister, Flaven Leon Burke; and brother, Gilford Leon.
Pallbearers will be Duane Ledford Jr., Courtney Roy, Andrew Lyons, Travis Schefcik, Brian McGrew and Bailey Rorex.
Honorary pallbearers will be Duane Ledford Sr., Lee Schexnaider and Kolby Ringuet.
Ethel enjoyed being with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved to cook, especially her rice dressing and pecan praline. Her grandchildren called her the pancake queen because they were so good.
She enjoyed working in her yard, for which she received the Garden Award from the Rayne Garden Club three times.
She was a very active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Good Samaritan Group, Ladies Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America, Lay Carmelite Order, Eucharistic Minister, helped with Masses for the shut-ins at Rayne Guest Home for 28 years, CCD teacher for five years, Baptismal program for 10 years, and received the Bishop Service Award Medal in 1999.
She was a member of the Elderberries, Golden Club, American Legion Auxiliary. She was one of the first groups to recite the French rosary at the funeral home for the parish. In April 2007, she received from the Beta Sigma Phi the Service Award in recantation and accomplishments for the service to the community of Rayne.
She attended school in Duson and graduated from Scott High School in 1946. She then attended University of Southwest Louisiana with a degree in child development. She worked in the Head Start program for 25 years. She was a board member for the Christian Service Center for 20 years
A Rosary will be prayed Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne.
The family requests that visitation be observed in Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne on Wednesday, May 3, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Thursday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Curley “Hawk” Robinson

RAYNE - Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 6, at 1 p.m. at the Rayne Temple Church in Rayne for Curley “Hawk” Robinson, 68, who passed away at 7:27 a.m. Sunday, April 30, 2017, at the Acadia General Hospital in Crowley.
Rev. Cozy Gage Sr., will be officiating for the services. Burial will be in the Community Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rayne.
The family has requested the visitation to be held on Saturday, May 6, at 8 a.m. until time of services, all at the Rayne Temple Church in Rayne.
Survivors include two sisters, Shirley Robinson of Rayne and Melena Bennett of Port Arthur, Texas; one brother, John Arthur Jr. and wife,Mary Robinson of Port Arthur, Texas; several nieces and nephews, John Arthur Robinson III, Melvin Manns, Jackie Robinson, Jacqueline Robinson, Christopher Broussard Jr., Shi Broussard, Denashia Babineaux, Diana Petry, Nykiera Shelton, Javonna Dills, Sydney Brooks and Jordon Brooks.
Mr. Robinson was preceded in death by his parents, John Arthur and Gladys P. Robinson Sr.; one sister, Norma Jean Robinson; and one brother, Melvin James Robinson.

MIRE - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Mire for Melvin J. Meaux, 50, who passed away at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 2, at his home in Rayne.
Fr. Mike Armaud, pastor of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Mire, will be officiating for the services. Burial will be in the Assumption Catholic Church Cemetery in Mire.
The family requested the visitation begin on Wednesday, May 3, at 3 p.m. until time of services in the Duhon Funeral Home Chapel in Rayne. A Rosary was recited on Wednesday at 6 o’clock in the evening in the funeral home chapel.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara L. Meaux of Rayne; one son, Brandon Williams of Texas; two step-daughters, Carolyn Portalis of Crowley and Mandy Maynard of Lafayette; three brothers, Wayne and wife Linda Meaux of Duson, Shannon and wife Tricia Meaux of Mire and Brent and wife Danielle Meaux of Duson; two sisters, Cherie and husband Michael Wedlock of Mire and Ashley and husband Robby Guillory of Mire; six grandchildren, Brandt, Ashlon, Treylon, Hannah, Jayvian and Kamryn.
