Lady Wolves fall in playoff opener at North DeSoto

Any hopes the Lady Wolves had of pulling off a major upset in the Class 4A softball playoffs were put to rest early Friday afternoon in Rayne’s matchup with No. 1 seed North DeSoto.
The Lady Wolves ran into a buzzsaw in hurler Emma Cailie Delafield and struggled to figure her out in a 10-0 first-round loss.
Rayne, the No. 32 seed, finished the 2016-2017 season with a 6-19 record.
The Lady Griffins improved to 27-3 overall and was scheduled to meet Franklin Parish or Leesville in the regional round.
Delafield faced the minumum 18 batters in the contest that was halted after the sixth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule. She threw 70 pitches for 52 strikes and struck out 15 Rayne batters.
Jessie Cary was the lone Rayne hitter to reach base on the day, getting to first on a fielding error. She was then caught at second on a steal attempt.
The only other Lady Wolf to put the ball into play was leadoff hitter Trinity Axtell with a line-out to third in the first inning, while Elizabeth Daigle slapped a ground out to second base later in the sixth frame.
The Lady Griffins banged out 11 hits off Rayne senior hurler Madison Venable, including four long balls.

Wolves even out district tally with wins

The Rayne High Wolves bounced back last week with a sweep of a double-header against Washington-Marion claiming 14-3 and 11-1 wins over the Indians.
The two wins brings Rayne district tally to an even 4-4.
Rayne jumped out to an early lead over Washington Marion and took home a 14-3 victory on Tuesday.
The Wolves Varsity scored on a single by Alex Savoy, a double by Darian Richard, and a single by Tucker Babineaux in the first inning.
Rayne took an early lead in the first inning. The Wolves scored two runs when Alex Savoy singled with no outs in the first inning.
Rayne tallied 13 hits in the game. Lee James, Savoy, Hunter Meche, Darian Richard, and Zack Fontenot each collected multiple hits. Fontenot and Savoy each drove in three runs to lead the Wolves.
Rayne didn’t commit a single error in the field with Luke Cormier with the most chances on the field with five. Julian Harvey led the Wolves with four stolen bases.
Rayne grabbed an early lead on their way to an 11-1 victory over Washington-Marion during Tuesday’s second game of the double-header.
Rayne captured a 2-0 lead in the first inning with James and Savoy touching home.
The Wolves scored three runs in the fourth inning thanks to a single and triple by Darian Richard, and a groundout by Wyatt Comeaux.
Rayne collected seven hits with Richard and Zack Fontenot each collecting multiple hits. Fontenot and Richard each drove in two runs to lead state.
The Wolves added two more runs in the fifth for the 11-1 win.
Richard and Fontenot were each 2-for-3 at the plate and two RBIs each. Richard also banged out a triple. James, Harvey and Savoy were 1-for-3 on the day. James knocked out a double.
In a non-district contest on Wednesday, the Wolves defeated Carencro 3-1 in a low-scoring contest.
Both teams were strong on the mound Wednesday, but Rayne’s Hunter Meche allowed just five hits on the day.
Julian Harvey, Lee James, Tucker Babineaux, Zack, Darian, Tanner Lagrange, and Eric Alleman all had one hit to lead Rayne Wolves Varsity.
The Wolves were slated to meet Crowley High twice this week to complete their district slate. They will finish the regular season on April 22 before post-season pairings are announced on April 23rd.

‘Rotary Day’ proclaimed as Rayne club plans Ribbit Run, post-race events Saturday

Events planned, public invited to attend

Saturday’s second annual Rayne Rotary Club 5K Run — now officially dubbed “Ribbit Run” — will kick off activities of the third Rotary Day observance at The Depot Square.
In recognition of the event, Mayor Charles “Chuck” Robichaux has proclaimed Saturday, April 22, as “Rotary Day” in the city of Rayne.
The proclamation notes that the mission of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and to encourage and foster the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.
In his proclamation, Robichaux also notes that the Rotary Club of Rayne was established in June, 2011, and “the growth and success of the club for the past five years is indicative of the support of the community.”
Last year’s inaugural run brought more than 60 runners/walkers to the center of Rayne to take part in the 3.1-mile event through the neighborhoods of northeast Rayne.
The race begins and ends on Louisiana Avenue in the area of The Crossing at Mervine Kahn and The Warehouse.
A total of 20 awards — including top male and top female — will be presented following the timed event. First-place winners in each age category will receive engraved medals. Second- and third-place finishers will receive certificates.
On-line registration at $25 is available at register.cajuntiming.com through 11 p.m. today. After that, $30 final registration will be available at Depot Square on Friday, April 21 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. and on Race Day (Saturday) from 7 a.m. until 7:30 a.m..
Group packages are available for teams of 10 or more participants — $15 registration per participant.
A post-race party at Depot Square will include the race awards ceremony, music, jambalaya, sweets, hot dogs, a Frog Kissing Booth, cold refreshments, a chance to win $500 and other family-friendly activities — all of which will be going on during the race.
“We want to personally invite you and your family, friends, and coworkers to run, walk, hop, or crawl across the finish line,” said Cynthia Beslin, chairperson. “Runners, walkers, joggers with strollers, families, corporate teams, school track teams, and running clubs are all welcome to join in the fun.”

Dubois and his wife make their home in Nunez (between Kaplan and Abbeville). They are the parents of four children.
“His lifelong association with Catholic education in the Mount Carmel tradition will serve him well as he comes to know, love, and serve our school,” Bordelon said. “Please join me in thanking God for sending us Mr. Dubois and as well as praying for him as he makes this important transition.”
