Legion welcomes guests, new members

RAYNE - The April meeting of Arceneaux Post 77, American Legion, saw legionnaires welcome two new members and a guest during an abbreviated meeting held at the Legion Home.
Commander David Simon welcomed Frank Richard, 7th District Vice Commander, who gave a report of the Boys State program and urged legionnaires to concentrate on membership and annual dues for the post.
“Not only do we need to recruit veterans to become legionnaires,” state Richard, “but, we also have to retain who we have on a yearly basis.”
On the annual Boys State program, a reminder was given of the local post to again host the 7th District orientation on June 13 at the Legion Home in Rayne.
The 2018 Boys State program will again be held in June at Northwestern State University.
Under membership, it was noted that 151 memberships have been paid, excluding any dues received during the meeting.
Also welcomed to the meeting and speaking on behalf of the Sons of the Legion was Terry Broussard. He thanked everyone for their service and help, and also expressed his appreciation to Keith LaFleur who manned the ticket sales and collected numerous donations for the spring fundraiser.
Discussion was held of the annual spring fundraiser, a sausage poboy dinner sale held Sunday, April 8, at the Legion Home. Proceeds will help build up needed funds for events sponsored by Post 77.
The mandatory paperwork for two new legionnaires who were welcomed during the March meeting was received, including Bobby Fracier and Michael Pastor.
Robert Comeaux reported the kitchen sink was replaced at the Legion Home with supplies donated by Robley Moroux, legionnaire.
Memorial report was also given by Comeaux which listed Elton Bourque, a past commander, who passed away on April 2. Comeaux asked all legionnaires to attend the funeral home service of when Post 77 presents a U.S. Flag to the Bourque family.
Commander Simon announced the events and programs planned at the Legion Home, in addition to a reminder for awards to be provided by Post 77 for end of the school year at local and area schools.
A number of forms and reminder were received by Lee John, who invited anyone interested in the events to contact hime following the meeting.
Commander Simon reminded anyone who would like to make a take-out order purchase at the Legion’s kitchen by the Auxiliary can do so by calling the Legion Home at 334-4774.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned and the Legion cooks provided a delicious meal.
