Rayne Planning Commission tackles zoning issues

RAYNE - The regular monthly meeting of the Rayne Planning Commission was held Monday March 26, at 12:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall.
Members present were Lee Seilhan (chairman), Ron Sonnier, Sanders Senegal, Jerry Bergeron and Wayne Wyatt.
The first order of business was to consider a request for a variance for John Trahan to build a storage building at 812 South Parkerson Street. The property, currently zoned R1, includes a 43’ x 115’ section owned by Brenda Credeur Constantin and a 48’ x 115’ section to be purchased by Trahan.
It was stated the needed signatures have been collected by Trahan for the C-3 zoning change; afterwhich, commission members voted to approve the change.
A request was then submitted by ARC of Acadiana to re-zone lot 4 on block 3 of Sunrise Acres Subdivision, Rayne, for the construction of two group homes for handicapped residents. The request was to re-zone the property from an R-1 to a C-3 which will coincide with lots 1, 2 and 3 at the same location. Following a brief discussion, the request was approved by the commission.
Under other business to be properly brought before the Planning Commission, commission member Ron Sonnier brought forth information of property near his residence located within the city limits zoned commercial approximately 12-14 years ago.
The planned subdivision was to be named Rayne Heights with an R-1 zoning in Phase I, then a C-1 or C-3 zoning for the remaining 18 acres slated to be named Palamo Creek Subdivision owned by A.B. Lavergne Land Realty Co., LLC, located between Public Road and Highway 35 north.
Sonnier noted that since no work has begun in numerous years, he suggested the commission begin the process to revert the commercially zoned property back to residential zoning.
The commission approved an amendment to the agenda to advertise A.B. Lavergne Land Realty Co., L.L.C. property 18 acres currently zoned C-1 to revert back to an R-1 zoning.
It was also voted on and approved by the commission to begin the process of changing the zoning of the A.B. Lavergne Land Realty Co., L.L.C. property of 18 acres currently zoned C1 to R1.
