Festival of Words announces Sept. 25 line-up
On Wednesday, Sept. 25, the Festival of Words will present performances by author Sami Parbhoo, spoken word artist Alex PoeticSoul Johnson and musician Cedric Watson.
The free event will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Chicory’s Coffee & Café, 219 E. Martin Luther King Drive in Grand Coteau.
Alex Johnson is a writer, spoken word artist and entrepreneur. Known as PoeticSoul, this Lafayette native has worked as a teaching artist in Lafayette and St. Landry Parish schools and in the Lafayette Parish Juvenile Detention Home. She founded and operates Lyrically Inclined, a spoken word poetry organization in Lafayette. Her debut album, Scattered Thoughts, was released in December 2015.
Sami Parbhoo will read from Travels in the Seven Directions, a collection of short stories based on his journeys around the world. He was born in Kuwait to a Zoroastrian Indian father and Christian Palestinian mother. The title references the belief of many ancient cultures that we not only travel north, south, west, east, up and down but also within.
Cedric Watson is a four-time Grammy-nominated fiddler, singer, accordionist and songwriter with seemingly unlimited potential. He has performed French music in 17 countries and on seven full-length albums with various groups, including the Pine Leaf Boys, Corey Ledet, Les Amis Creole with Ed Poullard and J.B. Adams, and with his own group, Bijou Creole. As Watson performs, he will narrate the origins of the music he plays.
Guests are welcome to bring their own poems, songs or stories for the open mic. This free, community event is suitable for all ages and is sponsored by the Festival of Words Cultural Arts Collective.
