The Sabine Pass Lighthouse, located in the far southwest corner of Cameron Parish along the Sabine River between Louisiana and Texas, was first lit in 1857. The lighthouse, which is now cut off from the mainland, has survived many hurricanes, including an 1886 hurricane that destroyed the keeper’s house, a 1915 hurricane that swept away all the outbuildings, wharf and walkways, and hurricanes Audrey, Rita, Ike, Laura and Delta.

Claudette Olivier said she was raised to duck, dove and rabbit hunt, and she has hunted from Sabine Lake to Des Allemands to Dewey Wills Wildlife Management Area. Olivier started going duck hunting with her late father, Craig Olivier, when she was eight years old.

Angling for the news

Louisiana State Newspapers Editor Claudette Olivier grew up on her dad’s family’s rice farm in L’Anse aux Pailles and comes from a long line of hunter-farmers.
