Iota cruises past Lady Bears; Bulldogs win overtime thriller
Iota had just the right answer when struggling against a Church Point zone defense Monday - Madison Oliver, Brooke Andrepont and Lilly Zaunbrecher.
The three Iota players combined for 38 points inside the paint and had 18 rebounds, sparking the Lady Dogs to a 60-32 District 6-2A victory over Church Point.
“We just haven’t been shooting the ball real well lately, so we put a lot of emphasis on getting the ball inside,” said Iota coach Meghann LeJeune, whose team improved to 22-7 overall and 12-1 in league play.
“Even though we were facing a zone (defense) all night, we found a way to get it to our post and they were finishing.
“They were really aggressive posting up and our guards did a good job of getting them the ball.”
Oliver and Andrepont paced the Lady Dogs with 14 points apiece and Zaunbrecher had 10.
Andrepont was the rebound leader with seven boards. Zaunbrecher added six and Oliver had five.
Early on, the Lady Bears kept it close and trailed just 18-12 after the opening quarter.
That was as good as it would get, however.
The Lady Dogs pushed their lead to 12 (30-18) at the break and then outscored the Lady Bears 20-7 in the third frame to pull away.
“The first quarter, we didn’t play hardly any defense at all,” said LeJeune. “They were making shots; and on the other end, we just kept turning over the ball.
“We let them hang in there with us, but once we kind of settled in, it was our ballgame from there.”
The Lady Dogs closed out the game by outscoring Church Point 10-7 in the fourth quarter.
Another positive for the Lady Dogs was the play of Madeline Gatte, who had an impressive stat line of her own.
Gatte tallied 12 points and dished out 10 assists to go along with five rebounds and three steals.
In addition, Andriana Curtis scored six points and Naomi Rasberry had two.
Martisha Dugas and Chantell Jones paced the Lady Bears with nine and seven points, respectively.
The Lady Dogs close out the regular season on Thursday at Port Barre.
