Old Health Unit building for sale?
The Acadia Parish Police Jury will consider selling the old parish Health Unit building.
Constructed in 1963, the brick building is located at 530 W. Mill St., and has been vacant for a number of years.
Its use as a health unit ended when the parish constructed the new facility on Capitol Avenue.
In February, 2012, Jimmy Broussard, then-president of the Acadia Players theatrical group, approached the police jury’s Buildings and Grounds Committee with a proposal to lease the health unit to a community foundation to establish an Acadia Parish Center for the Arts and Culture.
At the April 13, 2012, meeting, the jury unanimously approved the recommendation from the committee to lease the building to the Acadia Players.
The group refurbished the interior of the building and used it for a number of years before it was again abandoned.
Secretary-Treasurer A.J. “Fatty” Broussard told the jury’s Legislative Committee here Tuesday night that the building has been appraised and, in order for the jury to sell the building, public bids will be requested.
No time line was set for the sale.
