Wolves even district slate, Ladies fall in stretch

The Wolves took a lead late in the ballgame and held on for a 7-2 districy win over Leesville High.
The win evened Rayne’s district slate at 2-all mid-way through the 2017 season.
As the contest was tied 1-all from a Hunter Meche run off a Erick Alleman sacrifice to center, the Wolves scored three runs in the fifth frame for a lead they retained.
Crossing the plate in the big fifth inning were Lee James, Collin Broussard and Tucker Babineaux who assumed base running duties for Huey Touchet who reached first on a single.
Leesville scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Wolves answered with Hunter Meche run in the sixth and another two in the seventh by Zack Fontenot and Darian Richard for the district win.
Recording the win for the Wolves was hurlers Collin Broussard and Huey Touchet. Broussard threw three frames for four strikeouts, three walks and no runs on two hits, while Touchet was on the mound for four innings recording three strikeouts, no walks and two runs on five hits.
In an earlier home contest against Leesville, the Wolves were handed a heartbreaker in a late-inning 2-1 loss.
Leesville was down 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning off a Hunter Meche score off a Alex Savoy RBI when Johnathon Harmon tripled off of Wolf hurler Hunter Meche, driving in two runs for the lead they kept for the win.
The pitching was strong on both sides with Leesville pitchers striking out five, while Rayne sat down ten on the day.
Collin Broussard led the Rayne offense with two hits in three at bats.
The Wolves were slated to host DeRidder today (Thursday) during another district contest, followed by a road game at Livonia on Saturday. They will continue district play on April 11th with a home contest against Washington-Marion at 6 p.m. at Gossen Memorial Park.
Lady Wolves
The Rayne High Lady Wolves have hit a snag in their district schedule with two hard losses.
In a home game against DeRidder, the Lady Wolves fell hard with a 19-0 score.
The Rayne batters were limited to only three hits during the contest behind a strong DeRidder pitching crew.
Claiming hits for the Lady Wolves were Tori Arceneaux with a single and a double, and Madison Venable with a single.
With a 8-0 lead, DeRidder scored six runs in the fifth frame for the shutout win.
Taking the loss on the mound for Rayne were Elizabeth Daigle (13 hits in 4 innings) and Madison Venable (one hit in the final inning).
During a road contest at Leesville, the Lady Wolves fell in another district contest with a 10-2 score.
With Leesville taking a 8-0 lead heading into the fifth inning, Rayne’s Jessie Cary and Madison Venable scored on RBIs by Tori Arceneaux and Trinity Axtell.
But it was too little too late as Leesville scored an extra run in the sixth inning for the win.
Madison Venable threw five innings for Rayne with one strikeout while giving up nine hits, while Elizabeth Daigle threw the last inning.
The Lady Wolves were schedule to meet Crowley High today (Thursday) during a 5:30 p.m. district contest at Gossen Memorial Park, followed by a non-district road trip at Beau Chene.
Rayne will honor their seniors on April 10th during “Senior Night” festivities prior to a non-district game against Church Point.

Menards named Frog Festival Grand Marshals

Carol and Helen Menard, long-active in numerous civic and social events throughout the city of Rayne, will be honored as the Grand Marshals of the 45th annual Rayne Frog Festival Parade.
Announcement of their selection for this honor was made during the Frog Festival pageants held Saturday, April 1, at the Civic Center.
They were nominated by family and friends.
The nomination letter points out that “James Carol Menard and Helen Hebert Menard ... have lived in the city of Rayne for 58-plus years and have continually made contributions that have helped Rayne grow and have promoted the city of Rayne and the Frog Festival.”
Carol Menard has been recognized on numerous occasions for his long record of outstanding work through and for civic organizations such as the Rayne Lions Club, of which he has been a member for 50-plus years.
As a Lions Club member, Carol Menard has been part of the cooking team since the first Frog Festival event took place. He also is a member of the Knights of Columbus and has contributed his time and cooking service for many area church and community events.
Carol Menard began his cooking while working out of state. Helen Menard provided telephone instructions for a recipe for chicken-and-sausage gumbo, according to the nomination.
The couple has unselfishly contributed many hours of cooking time to numerous city officials and workers, as well as to the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph Church, Rayne Catholic Elementary, Columbia Gulf Transmission and many retirement celebrations.
Carol Menard has also specialized in making turkey rolls, rice dressing and green-bean casserole for large RV groups such as the Cruisin’ Cajuns. Just recently he cooked the St. Joseph Church annual gumbo that fed approximately 600 people from across the city.
The couple has always made an excellent team. Helen Menard has been by her husband’s side at every event and has been seen throughout the whole day of an event either managing the kitchen or serving one of the dishes.
They also have served as choir members for the church for more than 50 years and are active members of the St. Joseph Elderberries and continue to serve many a good meal to the 50-plus members of that organization.
As the eldest of eight children, Helen Hebert Menard was looked up to by her siblings after the loss of their father. She was a steady and generous friend to their mother in giving her time and companionship, the nomination letter states.
Both Helen and Carol still carry on their generosity to family, friends and the community of Rayne by giving their time and service as needed.
Helen Menard has served as a member of the St. Joseph Altar Society for many years. She worked several years at The Rayne Acadian-Tribune, serving as Society Editor among other roles assisting Editor Myrta Fair Craig.
In closing, the nomination letter reads: “Many of the great citizens of Rayne have promoted the Frog Festival over the years, and Mr. Carol Menard and his wife, Helen Menard can be counted in that number. It is with great appreciation of their hard work and dedication to the city of Rayne that we would like to nominate these fine, upstanding citizens for the honor of being named the 2017 Frog Festival Parade Grand Marshals.”
The nominating committee agreed.

Frog Festival
Golden King & Queen
Edward and Marlene Habetz were presented as the 2017-18 Frog Festival Golden King and Queen by the Cajun Hospitality Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association during ceremonies Saturday afternoon at the Rayne Civic Center.
The Habetzes have been blessed with three beautiful daughters and three wonderful sons-in-law. They have eight grandchildren with five significant others and five great-grandchildren.
Both have been active in the community and Frog Festival activities for a number of years. Edward was recognized as male Volunteer of the Year for the City of Rayne by Beta Sigma Phi.
They were both very active in Festival Ray*la*ne and each won the coveted Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals, Division III Volunteer of the Year awards in successive years.
Marlene has been an active member of Beta Sigma Phi for 37 years. She previously served as chairperson of the Frog Festival Queen’s Pageants and Ball for several years and as chairperson of the Beta Sigma Phi Frog Festival Booth as well.
Additionally, as a member of ABWA, she chaired the first Golden Frog Queen selection event.
Because of Marlene’s participation in many events, Edward is involved by default. He always shows up with a can-do spirit and a smile ... as long as it doesn’t interfere with his Tuesday night card game and supper.
Marlene was instrumental in organizing “Project Pink,” a breast cancer awareness event sponsored by Preceptor Alpha Chi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.
When The Daily Advertiser was celebrating its 150th anniversary, one of the scheduled events was a Mardi Gras Ball. Edward was named the Krewe de News King I by The Advertiser. The ball was such a success it is now an annual event.
He will be retiring in July after working an amazing 52 years for The Advertiser. His plans are to continue his vegetable gardening and raising chickens.
Marlene is owner of Marlene’s Custom Design, which specialized in bridal and formal wear and festival regalia.
Together they enjoy their family, especially the great-grandchildren who are their greatest joys ... as well as their biggest frustrations.
Several family members, including Marlene’s mom, Verna Miller, were on hand for the Saturday presentation.
The Habetzes said they are thankful to ABWA for the honor of representing the “over 55” demographic of the Frog Festival and look forward to the year ahead.

Mosquito contract on P.J. agenda

Committees zip through agendas Tuesday night

CROWLEY - The Acadia Parish Police Jury will consider a request for a four-year contract extension from Mosquito Control Contractors, Inc., when it meets in regular session Tuesday, April 11.
Glenn Stokes, owner of MCCI, told the Mosquito Control Committee Tuesday night that he would put two more trucks on the roads of Acadia Parish — bringing the total to 12 — and would increase surveillance operations in the parish if his contract is renewed for four years.
“I think we can amortize those costs over four years and it won’t cost the parish any more for our services,” he said.
Stokes pointed out that 12 spray trucks would give Acadia Parish more mosquito-fighting ability than is offered in Lafayette (10 trucks).
“Lafayette has a much larger population, but Acadia has more roads,” Stokes added.
His offer was forwarded to the full jury.
MCCI’s current contract with the parish expires on June 12.
Also Tuesday night, the jury’s Buildings and Grounds Committee discussed ongoing repairs to the County Agents / USDA building from the August flood.
Jury President David Savoy noted that the repairs are almost certainly going to cost in excess of $100,000 before completion, but he also pointed out that the “this is a million-dollar building — probably more.”
E.L. Habetz Builders is the general contractor for the work and much discussion of late has focused on sealing the exterior bricks and “moving water away from the building.”
The jury’s Legislative Committee will recommend that the full jury consider reinstating the parish Wrecker and Towing Committee, which has been dormant since the late 1990s.
