Joel (Joe) Pousson

Joel (Joe) Pousson, 92, of Iota, entered eternal peace on October 1, 2017, marking the end of a life dedicated to God, country, family, and community. Services for Joe will be held on Wednesday, October 4, beginning at 9 a.m. with visitation at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home in Iota.  A rosary will be recited at 10 a.m, followed by a procession to St. Joseph Catholic Church for the celebration of a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m.
Born in Iota on September 6, 1925, Joe was the eldest of four children born to Timothy M. and Mary Bourgeois Pousson. He graduated from Iota High School and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps—a predecessor to the U.S. Air Force—eventually serving in the Korean War. Upon his return home, Joe worked in multiple jobs around the country ranging from oil field services to bookkeeping, but he ultimately returned to Iota where he owned his own welding business for many years. Joe unofficially retired as a welder and soon after became Postmaster General for Iota, later retiring from the U.S. Postal Service.  Throughout his life and into retirement, he took great pride in looking after the people of his community as well as his family and friends.
A beloved son, brother, companion, uncle, and friend, Joe enjoyed surrounding himself with his family and friends. He and his life companion Aloysia (“Lo”) loved to travel and made frequent trips to destinations across the U.S. Joe was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed sports such as fishing and duck hunting. Being a creature of habit, Joe most of all loved the routines in his life – he could be found daily driving through town, stopping at the post office, and visiting with friends over a cup of coffee.  On most Saturdays, he would head to the Crowley Town Club for dinner with Lo and their good friends C.A. and Mary Agnes Fabacher.
Joe took significant interest in keeping up with the lives and accomplishments of his various nieces and nephews, all of whom adored and respected him as their “Paran.” His love and loyalty toward those around him is most evident in how he responded to the request of his dying best friend, Larre F. Butler, who asked Joe to look after his wife and young children after he passed. Larre’s widow Aloysia (Lo) and Joe became best friends and companions for the duration of their lives.  Joe respected and loved Lo, and he looked after her and Larre’s children as if they were his own. Joe was a quintessential role model and mentor who exemplified a life of fairness, kindness, and humility. His love, astute wisdom, and friendship will not be forgotten.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Timothy and Mary Pousson; his companion, Aloysia “Lo” Butler; his sister, Betty J. Hebert and her husband Wallace “Wally”; brother Eugene “Gene” Pousson, his wife Ruth, and their son Benny Pousson; brother Van Pousson, his wife Emma Jean, and their son Mark Pousson; as well as Lo’s daughter, Beverly Butler Domingues.
Those left to cherish their Patriarch’s memory are his extended family, Brandon P. Butler and Larre G. Butler, both of Crowley, and Stephen B. Butler of Estes Park, CO.  He is also survived by four nephews: Ray Pousson of Orange, Texas, John Hebert of Dayton, Texas, Joel Hebert of Edinburg, Texas, and Timmy Pousson of Leesville; as well as six nieces: Sheila Lathrop and Freda Rast, both of Orange, Texas, Renee Hebert of Spring, Texas, Anita Williams of Pineville, MO, Michelle Posey of Maurepas, and Angela K. Pousson of Lufkin, Texas; in addition to numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, other extended family, and long-time friends.
The Pousson and Butler families wish to extend their sincerest gratitude to the nurses and staff of the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings for the excellent care provided in Joe’s later years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to honor Joe’s memory make a donation in his name to St. Francis Catholic School, 490 St. Joseph Avenue, Iota, LA 70543, or to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 604 St. Joseph Avenue, Iota, LA 70543.
Condolences may be sent to the family by www.geesey-ferguson.com
Arrangements have been entrusted to Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home Inc. of Iota.

Wolves prepare for district with win over Leesville

LEESVILLE - Just as Rayne High is preparing for district to begin next week, the Wolves traveled to Leesville on Friday where they claimed a 28-18 win over the Wampus Cats.
“We collected ourselves, filled in where we needed to, and pulled out a win,” stated Rayne Head Coach Curt Ware following the Wolves’ closest score thus far as the Wolves now stand at 3-0 overall.
“With the kids we have out right now with injuries and the way everyone stepped up, I’m really proud of our team right now,” Ware continued. “We had a bunch of guys playing both sides tonight and really came through. The gutted it out and did what they had to do.”
With a first quarter that gave the impression of a great ballgame under the Friday night lights, the Wolves opened the second quarter ready to light up the scoreboard.
Rayne secondary defensiveman picked off a Leesville pass for an interception, setting up the Wolves near midfield. The 48-yard drive included runs by Trent Winbush, Darion SEnegal and Fontenot, Winbush found the endzone on a 17-yard touchdown run. A Morgan Manuel extra point gave the Wolves a quick 7-0 lead. But, more was yet to come.
On Rayne’s very next drive only two plays were need for another Wolf score, a return by Fontenot and a 24-yard touchdown run by Winbush. Manuel’s extra point saw Rayne increase their lead to 14-0 with more second quarter action to come.
As the Wolves took over at their own 29-yard line on an attempt by the Cats on fourth and 15, Rayne needed only one handoff for a 71-yard touchdown run by Darion Senegal. Another extra point by Manuel put the Wolves up 21-0 midway through the second quarter.
Leesville quarterback Chris Varges began to see his targets and combined a long drive ending in an eight-yard touchdown completion to Kobe Joiner. The point after attempt was wide and Rayne still held a favorable 21-6 lead.
In the closing minutes of the first half, Rayne cobined 14 plays for a 62-yard scoring drive, compliments of Winbush, Fontenot and Senegal. Winbush bulldozed his way into the endzone for his third touchdown of the night and Manuel split the uprights once again for a 28-6 lead as teams took their halftime break.
Vargas collected most of his 362 passing yards in the second half for Leesville as the Wampus Cats score two touchdowns, both completions by Vargas.
Leesville was on a roll for another score late in the final quarter of play, but Tony Roberts collected one of Rayne’s three interceptions for the closing seconds and another Rayne win.
Roberts was joined by Jamarcus Monroe and Zach Fontenot for interceptions on the night.
Completing the defensive leaders were Monroe with eight tackles, Trent Winbush and Canaan Olivier with six, along with four by Fontenot, Tony Roberts, Ron Roberts, Tyreece Beverly and Marlon Foreman.
Leading Rayne’s 326 total offensive during the ballgame was Trent Winbush with 29 carries for 165 yards and three touchdowns.
Darion Senegal averaged 25 yards per carry with four carries for 100 yards and a touchdown.
Teammate Zach Fontenot had eight carried for 47 yards, and Darien Harmon had two carries for 10 yards.
“I think tonight was a great win considering what we had to overcome to get it,” noted Ware of the hard-fought contest.
“I think our offense did what they usually do, minus a starter back there,” Ware continued while he assessed the win. “Our defense held it together considering they haven’t seen a quarterback throw this much and make completions. I’m proud of the way they all held it together and played well and get the win. This win was a good one we prepare for district next week.”
The Wolves will host Teurlings Catholic on Friday culminating Rayne High’s homecoming week activities. Kickoff for the district contest is 7 p.m. at Wolf Stadium.

Lalande, Gatte joined in holy matrimony

Couple to reside in Church Point following wedding trip to Thailand

The beautiful St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne was the setting for the Saturday, Sept. 30, nuptials uniting Claire Cathleen Lalande of Church Point and Dillon Shay Gatte of Rayne in marriage.
The 6:30 p.m. Sacrament of Holy Matrimony was celebrated by Fr. Christopher Cambre.
The bride is the daughter of Paul and Celeste Lalande of Church Point. She is the granddaughter of Philip and Dolores Z. Habetz of Roberts Cove and Daniel Lalande of Crowley and the late Andree’ M. Lalande.
Claire, who is a graduate of Notre Dame, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and is currently employed as a pediatric registered nurse at Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Lafayette.
The groom is the son of Karla and Eric Thomas of Rayne and Damon and Joan Gatte of Lake Charles. He is the grandson of Jody Wilkerson of Jennings, Clifford Beard of Crowley, Yvonne Tramel of Basile and Rudy Gatte of Iota.
Dillon is a graduate of Notre Dame and is presently employed with Prevost Electric Co.
Escorted to the altar by her father, the bride was gorgeous in a sophisticated strapless fit and flare lace and tulle wedding gown designed by Martina Liana. The gown featured a fitted bodice, sweetheart neckline and cathedral train, and its clear beading caught the light beautifully, making a bold and elegant statement. The bride paired her gown with a cathedral length, one tier tulle veil finished with a cut edge and designed by Bel Aire Bridal.
Claire carried a clutch bouquet of white dove roses interspersed with quicksand roses, white O’Hara roses and white ranunculus.
In keeping with tradition, a mother of pearl rosary belonging to the bride’s late paternal grandmother served as “something old,” and the diamond and gold three tier drop earrings she wore served as “something new.” The groom’s step-grandmother’s diamond bracelet was “something borrowed,” while a diamond and sapphire engagement ring belonging to the bride’s maternal grandmother was “something blue.”
The duties of maid of honor were shared by Jaclyn Lalande, sister of the bride, and Simone Habetz, first cousin of the bride.
Bridesmaids were Natalie Thomas, sister of the groom; Ellyn Lalande, sister-in-law of the bride; and Hannah Fremaux and Hannah Simon, friends of the bride.
The bridal attendants were clad in cowl neck liquid metal chiffon halter Nouvelle Amsale gowns in rose gold. The gowns were tied at the waists and featured flowing skirts that added lovely movement to the elegantly draped design.
The bridesmaids carried clutch bouquets of white hydrangeas and amnesia roses, along with quicksand, Sahara and ivory roses.
Caleb Simon, friend of the groom, served as best man. Standing as groomsmen were Alex Lalande, brother of the bride; Stephen Hamic, Zac D’Aquin and Beau Petitjean, friends of the groom; and Jack Thomas and John Eric Thomas, brothers of the groom.
Jerry Menard and Evan Doucet, friends of the groom, served as ushers.
Musical selections for the ceremony were provided by organist Kurt Boudreaux and trumpeter Will Green.
Selected scriptures were read by Dinah Habetz, aunt of the bride, and Brooke Thomas, aunt of the groom. Jackie Valdetero, aunt of the bride, led the Responsorial Psalm.
For her daughter’s wedding day, the mother of the bride, the former Celese Habetz, selected a Tadashi Shoji gown in the color petal bloom with elegant embroidered lace and cap sleeves.
The mother of the groom, the former Karla Beard, chose a dusky rose Mignon crepe chiffon gown adorned with rosettes and featuring an off the shoulder neckline.
Both mothers wore corsages of ivory majolica roses and dusty miller.
Following the ceremony, family and friends joined the newlywed couple for a reception at The Crossing at Mervine Kahn in Rayne. The historic venue was decorated with gold candelabras, rose gold vases and pillar candlescapes featuring white hydrangeas and a mixture of roses.
The bride’s round, five-tiered ivory buttercream cake was decorated with an intricate lace pattern and topped with Sahara, quicksand and white O’Hara roses.
The groom’s German chocolate cake was made in the shape of a red snapper on a cutting board.
On the Thursday evening prior to the wedding, the parents and step-parents of the groom hosted a 6 p.m. rehearsal dinner at The Bank at Mervine Kahn in Rayne. Guests enjoyed bisque and salad paired with prime rib and filet mignon.
Following a honeymoon trip to Thailand, the couple will reside in Church Point.
