Mary Anderson

Funeral services were held on Sunday July 23, , at 1 p.m. in the Gossen Funeral Home Chapel for Mary Anderson, 85, who died Friday July 21, 2017, at Rayne Guest Home in Rayne.
Interment was in the St. Joseph Mausoleum and Cemetery No. 2 in Rayne.
Pastor Gene Lee conducted the Funeral Services.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Doré and spouse Ernest; two sons, Dave Cormier and spouse Linda, and Ricky Cormier and companion Marcella Lejeune. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and 14 great-grand children; and two sisters Allien Prejean and spouse Joseph, and Evelyn Aucoin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dave Meche and Effie Marie Cormier Meche; her husbands, Sanders Campbell, Louis Allen Cormier and John Anderson; and her brothers, Elton and Roy Meche.
Mrs. Anderson enjoyed sewing and word-search puzzels.
Pallbearers were Lynn Leger, Chad Cormier, Evan Cormier, Chase Guidry, Rick Cormier II and Beau Daigle .
The family requested visitation be observed in Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne on Sunday July 23, from 8 a.m. until the funeral services.

Verna Lou Thibodeaux Miller

Funeral services for Verna Lou Thibodeaux Miller, 91, of Rayne, were held on Friday, July 21, at 3 p.m. in Gossen Funeral Home Chapel in Rayne.
Father Christopher Cambre, associate pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne, officiated the service.
Interment followed in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery No. 2 in Rayne.
Visitation was held on Thursday, July 20, from 3:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. in Gossen Funeral Home with a rosary being recited at 7 p.m. Visitation continued on Friday from 8 a.m. until service time in the funeral home.
Mrs. Miller passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, in her Rayne residence.
Mrs. Miller worked as Deputy Tax Collector for Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office for 25 years. She was a member of Woodmen of the World, ABWA, CFMA, and Retired Sheriff’s Association.
Survivors include her daughters, Marlene M. Habetz and husband Edward of Rayne, Cynthia M. Vidrine and husband Richard of Ville Platte, and Donna M. Ancelet and husband Carl of Egan; son, Frederick C. Miller and wife Vita of Duson; 12 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Preceding Mrs. Miller in death were her husband of 72 years, Freddie Miller; son, Carl J. Miller; parents, Philip and Aurora Elizabeth Fruge Thibodeaux; and siblings, Sybil T. Miller, Milton Thibodeaux, Curley Thibodeaux, Anna Mae T. Leger, and Eva Ruth “Tipsy” T. Kissinger.
Serving as pallbearers were Christopher Ancelet, Mark Miller, Robert Faulk, Walter Mire, Nasen Soileau and Wesley Guidry.
Named as honorary pallbearers were Herman Miller, Bo John Armand and Jackie Hebert.

Update as deputies investigate fatal hit-and-run near Rayne

UPDATE: Monday, July 24, 2017
Deputies with the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office continue their investigation into a fatal hit and run which occurred at approximately 9:00 pm last night, July 23, on Quarter Pole Road near Highway 98 just east of Rayne.

The investigation revealed the victim, identified as Ricky Joyner, 61 of Rayne, was riding a bicycle on Quarter Pole Road when a vehicle driven by Ivy J. Roger, 42 of Rayne, struck Joyner. The vehicle fled the scene and was located not far from the scene of the accident. Roger left the vehicle and fled the area. Joyner was pronounced dead at the scene.

“During the investigation, deputies confirmed the identity of the driver as Roger and with the assistance of Rayne Police, were able to take Roger into custody in Rayne,” stated Sheriff K.P. Gibson.

After the apprehension of Roger, deputies secured a search warrant to obtain blood from Roger due to non-cooperation and belief that he was intoxicated. Roger has had multiple issues with driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Records indicate that prior to the fatal hit and run, that Roger has been charged with DWI on five separate occasions and was currently under suspension due to a previous DWI.

Roger was booked into the Acadia Parish Jail for hit and run, operating a vehicle under suspension and vehicular homicide. DWI charges are pending verification from the crime lab.

RAYNE - Acadia Parish Sheriff's deputies are investigating a fatal hit-and-run on Quarter Pole Road just outside in the east city limits of Rayne.

A bicyclist was struck and died on scene just after 9:00 p.m., deputies say.

Deputies are actively investigating the scene as well as seeking a possible suspect.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.

UPDATE: Sunday, July 23, 2017
RAYNE - Blake Jones (24) of Rayne was pronounced dead at Lafayette General Hospital at 8:24 a.m. this morning (July 23) as a result of the single gunshot wound he sustained in yesterday's shooting incident.
Desmond Dugas (20), who was arrested yesterday following the shooting, is still in custody with a parole hold.
A warrant application has been submitted for the offense of second degree murder and if signed will be added to his pending charge of certain felon in possession of a firearm.

RAYNE - The Rayne Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred Saturday, July 22, 2017, at approximately 1:58 p.m. in the 500 block of Marie Avenue.
The 24 year old victim was shot in the head and is at an area hospital on life support in critical condition.
Officers arrested Desmond Dugas (age 20), who is charged with felon in possession of a firearm and attempted second degree murder.
The victim's name is being held until family members can be notified.

Alvin L. Morgan Sr.

Alvin L. Morgan Sr., 69, of Crowley, formerly of Malvern, Arkansas, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017, at his home in Crowley surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 7, 1948, in Emmet, Arkansas, to loving parents, Henry Eugene and Doris (McClellan) Morgan Sr.
Alvin graduated from A. A. Wilson High School in May 1966 in Malvern. After graduation, he enlisted in the military and was assigned to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He served from Jan. 12, 1967, until Jan. 11, 1973. Alvin proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force. He was a Security Police Officer. Alvin was honorably discharged on January 11, 1973. After the military, he attended OTC (College of the Ouachitas) and received an Associate’s Degree in Automotive Mechanics. He later moved to Lafayette, ID and was employed at Subaru as an automotive mechanic for 19 years (Dec. 5, 1988-Feb. 16, 2007) and retired.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Eugene and Doris Marie (McClellan) Morgan Sr.; and one son, Gavin Michael Morgan.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Margie Caldwell Morgan of Crowley; one daughter, Ketina Y. Morgan Witherspoon (Elton) Malvern; one son, Alvin L. Morgan Jr. (Deborah) of Indianapolis; four grandsons and two granddaughters; four sisters, Teresa Davis (John) Malvern, Debra Hill, Malvern, Gwendolyn Morgan, Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Remona Morgan Block (Vernon), Prescott, Arkansas; four brothers, Bobby Morgan, Jimmie James Morgan (Izena),Wichita, Kansas, Jonathan Morgan, Malvern and Rev. Henry Eugene Morgan Jr. (Rita) Malvern; and nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, July 22, at 1 p.m., Rev. Henry Morgan Jr. will officiate the services. The family is requesting visiting hours be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home Inc. of Crowley. Willie James Mayfield

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Crowley for Willie James Mayfield, 74, of Crowley on Saturday, July 22, at 10 a.m., with Father Godwin Imoru officiating. Visitation will be held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Crowley on Saturday, July 22, from 8:15 a.m. until the time of his funeral Mass.
Willie was born in Crowley on Nov. 19, 1942, to Clarence Mayfield and Alzina Breaux Mayfield. Willie was called from this life on July 13, 2017. Willie enjoyed fishing and cooking BBQ for his family and friends. He also enjoyed watching wrestling. Willie was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Willie is survived by his two sons, Wilfred Etienne (Ashley) of Leesville and Willie Mayfield Thomas (Anya) of New Iberia; his three daughters, Trulena Morgan of Houston, Alzina Mayfield of Mermentau and Ericka Williams of Crowley; his four brothers, Wilbert Mayfield, of Crowley, Harrington Mayfield of Crowley, Raymond Mayfield of Crowley and Andrus Mayfield of Crowley; his two sisters, Margie Dominque (Riley) of Rayne and Archy Jones (Albert) of Crowley; and his 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Willie is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Alzina Mayfield; and his three brothers, Melvin Mayfield, Anthony Mayfield and Junius Mayfield.

David Lee Brown

Graveside Services will be held for David Lee Brown, 79, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 in the Crowley City Cemetery with Rev. Robert Morales and Rev. Karl Stoute officiating. A Gathering of Remembrance will be held with Mr. Brown’s family and friends following the graveside service at the Southwind Nursing and Rehab Activity Center. Mr. Brown passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Southwind Nursing and Rehab Center in Crowley, LA.
Mr. Brown is survived by three daughters, Angela and James Taylor, Maria and Wade Young and Miranda and Brett Mire all of Egan, LA; seven grandchildren, Bethany, D. J., Jonathan, Kristina, Haley, Dustin and Zachary; six great-grandchildren, Ethan, Rylee, Kenzie, Adisyn, Hadley and Jordyn; brother, Clarence Brown and his wife, Ora-Lee of Crowley, LA; three sisters, Katleen Miller of Iota, LA, Lorbell Brown of Morse, LA and Millie Brown of Crowley, LA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Faye Brown; parents, Edward and Rosie Brown; brother, Walter Brown; sisters, Alice Mae Weldon and Noralee Schexnayder.
Pallbearers will be James Taylor, Brett Mire, D.J. Meche, Jonathan Young, Zachary Mire and Dustin Meche.
